Tips for Handling Your Hermit Crab

Hold your crabs often. The more you do it, the more comfortable you will become with your crustacean pets. They will also get used to it as well. You will learn how they move and what positions they like and don’t like.
Expect to get pinched. Your crabs are crabs and do have pinchers. It is their natural reaction to pinch if you touch their claw or if you are holding them in a way that does not make them feel secure.
When pinched, run them under lukewarm water. If your hermit crabs pinch you, run them under lukewarm water to force them to release their claw.
Wear Gloves. If you are afraid of getting pinched and want to hold your crabs, wear thick winter gloves or gardening gloves. Then, the crabs can pinch the gloves and not your skin. The gloves can serve a tool to help you understand when your crabs pinch and how to hold them without getting pinched. Eventually, the gloves can come off and you can enjoy your crabs with your bare hands.
Hand feed them. A large number of seasoned crab owners recommend conditioning your crabs by teaching them that being picked up means getting something sweet to eat, such as a pureed fruit. By doing this again and again, you can build a relationship of trust and expectation with them and it should reduce or eliminate the pinching.
