Water is the Most Important Hermit Crab Need

The importance of water can not be stressed more. Hermit crabs can live longer without food than they can without water. If no water is in their home they will die. Dehydration is probably the main cause of death for Hermit crabs.
Hermit crabs have gills and they must be moist at all times. So a water dish, pool or a sponge must be available to your Hermit crabs at all times. Dunking and misting are effective ways of insuring that moisture is being provided. Your Hermit crabs should be dunked 2 or 3 times a week. This can be accomplished by filling a water container or bowl with several inches of luke warm water in the sink for only 1 or 2 minutes. Dunking allows water to pass through the shell moistening the gills. Hermit crabs can also be misted with distilled water from a mist bottle on a daily basis of about 3 times a day.(Note: never use chlorinated water)
